It is planned that the NHS specialist diabetes service, currently based in out of date accommodation on the Raigmore campus, will move to a new site within the Highland Diabetes Institute in August 2008. There are approximately 7,500 patients in the Highlands with diabetes and around one third of these have the majority of their care undertaken by the Raigmore hospital specialist services.

 
The new NHS Centre will be equipped with consulting rooms, a podiatry clinic and a facility for retinal screening as well as accommodation for a dietician. Three consultant diabetologists and specialist nurses will provide secondary diabetes care. A small laboratory will be included in the new NHS Centre so that blood results will be available during clinics. An additional feature is a teaching room where patients with diabetes can be taught the elements of self care.
