UHI Millennium Institute

UHI is a federation of Colleges and Research Institutes scattered widely throughout the Highlands and Islands. It is expected that it will receive full university title in 2008. During the past few years it has been developing a Health Faculty. This faculty now consists of a number of components. These include:

1) The Ness Foundation – This organisation has particular research interests in the genetics of schizophrenia and lipids related to neurodevelopmental disorders. It is currently located at Dochfour near the east end of Loch Ness.

2) Two years ago UHI successfully negotiated a 50% academic share of the Centre for Rural Health with Aberdeen University. This research institute, presently located in the Green House will relocate to Phase 2 of the Centre for Health Science when it is completed in April 2008.

3) The new UHI Department of Diabetes - This recent development was launched a year ago and is also located in the Green House, where a new laboratory has been established. The UHI Department of Diabetes will relocate to the Highland Diabetes Institute in the Centre for Health Science when this part of the building is completed in August 2008.

In addition to these research interests UHI is involved in a number of teaching and training initiatives including the new Dental Therapy degree course commencing in 2008 which will be taught out of the Dental Institute in the Centre for Health Science and Masters courses in infection control and in decontamination.
