Inverness Dental Centre
Teaching Clinic
The Inverness Dental Centre accommodates a teaching school which provides dental education for the first time within the Highlands. 14 dental chairs are provided within the teaching school, making a total of 22 NHS dental chairs within the Centre for Health Science.
Within the Dental Centre there is a virtual school serving the Highlands, Islands and Dumfries which enables students to be taught remotely and participate in lessons directed from Inverness.
A new course in Dental Therapy is offered by the prospective University of the Highlands & Islands (in partnership with NES) to 8 students at the Dental Centre. This is a 3 year course in Oral Health Science leading to a degree in Dental Therapy. After training, dental therapists can perform dental procedures such as extractions and fillings under the supervision of a dental surgeon.
The ‘phantom heads’ room is provided for teaching purposes which consists of 12 simulated heads providing different clinical scenarios for dentists, students and therapists to improve their clinical skills and learn new techniques with an element of realism which is remarkable. The phantom heads are all linked up to hi-tech cameras and computer screens.
