Clinical Skills Centre

The Clinical Skills Centre will be a key component of the healthcare teaching and training cluster in the Centre for Health Science. Kevin Baird, a Consultant orthopaedic surgeon has recently been appointed to the post of Clinical Lead and clinical tutors from the University of Stirling, NHS Highland and the University of Aberdeen will teach in the Clinical Skills Centre when it is completed.

It is expected that courses in resuscitation will be taught to medical, nursing and dental students as well as upgrading these skills for healthcare staff on a regular basis. One room in the Clinical Skills Centre will be set up as a hospital ward to train doctors and nurses in practical skills. Another room will be used to teach minor surgical procedures and endoscopic procedures will also be taught.

Good communications are at the heart of good clinical practice and courses on communication will be a regular feature at the Clinical Skills Centre. Electronically operated mannequins have now reached an advanced state of sophistication and will be extensively used for teaching a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic skills. A bank of simulated patients who are either actors or patients will shortly be set up to help with teaching and student examinations. State-of-the art video conferencing facilities will also be available to enable courses to be taught to a wide spectrum of users in many locations.
