Inverness Dental CentreThe Inverness Dental Centre is located in Phase Two of the Centre for Health Science. The provision of NHS primary dental care in the Highlands and Islands has traditionally been difficult due to poor dental accommodation and difficulties in recruitment of dental staff. The Inverness Dental Centre however, has created a further capacity for 3000 patients to be registered with dentists. New patients have come from the dental waiting list, dental help lines and those calling the emergency helpline. Eight NHS dental chairs will be provided in the Dental Centre and a state of the art decontamination unit will further enhance the quality of service to patients.
The Inverness Dental Centre is run in partnership by NHS Highland and NHS Education for Scotland. A further 14 dental chairs are used to train student dentists and dental therapists as part of the teaching school. Some of the student dentists are final year undergraduates from Dundee University and care for patients who consent to being treated by a student under the supervision of a qualified dentist/tutor. This creates additional capacity for dental treatment in Inverness and it is hoped that the Inverness Dental Centre will play an instrumental role in the relocation or retention of newly qualified dentists in the area.
